Let’s Be Honest – False Necessities

Every day, I feel as though I need a cup of coffee to survive. If I don’t have my cup of coffee, I have a pretty killer headache around lunchtime. I also pretty much compulsively check my Instagram feed daily. Sometimes, three times a day, but sometimes only once. I get really absorbed in reading a book, and I love either a dessert or a glass of wine after dinner (lately it’s been the glass of wine or some cheese). But these things won’t literally sustain me. They may make my day better, and I may rely on them for

Let’s Be Honest – Sugar Addict

I’m addicted to sugar. We don’t regularly keep cookies or ice cream in our house. I’ve been known to throw away a mostly good box of Oreos, and we regularly throw out Halloween, Easter, and Christmas candy because we never finish it all. We even have tried to cut back on sugar by only have dessert one night a week. Yet, we’re still addicted. I get that crash and burn feeling later in the afternoon and I typically feel like I need something a little sweet after each meal. Tyler and I will hide sweets and than pull them out

What has Starbucks done to us?

Oh baby. The Pumpkin Spice Latte is back. And the Salted Caramel Mocha, and pretty soon I’m going to see Gingerbread, Peppermint, Egg Nog, etc.  ‘Tis the season…for Starbucks. Many of you have already had at least one fall drink (and I don’t mean Pumpkin Ale). I’ll admit it. I’ve had one Pumpkin Spice Latte. I wanted to get a Venti, but I resisted on account of no one needs that much milk in their stomach at once. If I didn’t feel like a sell-out, I would pin this Starbucks ad on my “Fall” board on my Pinterest. However, I’m much

Let’s Be Honest

Dwelling Inside or Out? When you see me pondering and if you ask me what I’m thinking about, there is an 88% chance I’ll be thinking about the future, a 10% chance I’m thinking of the past, and a 2% chance I’m thinking of the current situation. It’s so much easier to think of what I’m going to do or what happened yesterday, things I can reflect on or try to control, instead of thinking about what is happening now. I’m not sure if it’s because I really like control, as I’ve said before, and can think of and write down

Let’s Be Honest

I read this quote the other day while prepping for the new school year: Ethan, himself “The effective teacher strives for purposeful movement toward a common end. You cannot control your students’ minds without shutting them down. But you can lead them.” – The Lost Tools of WritingI stopped reading. I put down the book and walked away. I could not imagine that this quote would apply to me. Not about my students let’s say, but my son. Let’s face it,  I want to control my son’s mind. I want to change the way he thinks, the decisions he makes,

Let’s Be Honest

For the last ten or so years, I’ve been a snob. I’ve been prideful about never having read or seen a Harry Potter book or movie. I never got any of the witty jokes or references about Snape or Dumbledore and I was glad. But no longer. I admit it. I’m in the midst of reading the Harry Potter series (have yet to see a movie) and I love them. I even stayed up until after midnight last night. This was obviously a silly decision. I like to pretend that staying up late will not affect my attitude towards my
